The Indian Government created the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) under the Automotive Industry Standard-140 (AIS 140) with an aim to improve and ensure the efficiency of the transport system. 

It requires all public transportation systems, including trucks, autos, taxis, school buses, and other commercial vehicles, to have the AIS-140 GPS Tracker System.

The most consistent use of AIS-140 standards, as well as rigorous adherence to them, can aid in the reduction of on-road congestion, minimize environmental impact and improve traffic management.

Vehicles that fall under this norm

India’s government mandates that all commercial vehicles, including private and public transit, must be AIS certified.

• Cabs: Car and taxi owners and also fleet owners.
• Intercity Public Transport: Buses that undertake long-distance travel between cities. 
• Institution: Institutions that provide bus services.
